Is the Key To

      -- Concept Four

Listen and Learn

It was my own best thinking that got me here. So when I came to Al-Anon I listened for the answers on how to get out of where I was. What I heard was a new point of view which helped me gain a different perspective on my situation.

Once I was given a new perspective, I was able to see options that I hadn't seen before, including "Don't just do something, sit there!" (Since my inclination at the time was to get the heck out of Dodge no matter what!)

By listening I was able to see that I was not alone. By listening I was able to feel the healing balm of humor. By listening I was able to warm my heart in the love and fellowship of my group. By listening I was able to gain insight into myself and others.

Peace and Serenity

Sometimes just one word was able to open the door for me on a whole new depth of understanding. I always heard what I needed to hear, and I always left a meeting feeling better and more at peace than when I arrived.

I think that "Listen and Learn" is half of a dynamic duo in Al-Anon, its cohort being "Keep an Open Mind." If you can listen with an open mind, you can learn all you need to find peace and serenity.

In fact, one of my favorite things to listen to at the meetings was the suggested opening, especially the phrase: "There is no situation too difficult to be bettered and no unhappiness too great to be lessened."

Wonderful Al-Anon Promises

There was time that I needed to hear that often; and even though I couldn't see how that could be true for me, I kept an open mind that it just might be. Sure enough, it was.

Listen and learn is one of the wonderful promises of Al-Anon - listen to the old-timers, listen to the newcomers, listen to yourself, and listen to your HP, and you will learn what you need to know.
